AN-2 engine fire/overheat!
AN-2 engine fire/overheat!
Hello, I just got this aircraft today and I am really happy about it! However after like 2 minutes my cylinder temperature goes really high and eventually ends with a engine fire and failure. Could anyone help me ?

I'm having the same issue.
Re: AN-2 engine fire/overheat!
Keep cowl flaps open, do not use throttle on 100% for long time.

Yep, that was it. Thanks.Andrey wrote:Keep cowl flaps open, do not use throttle on 100% for long time.

You can even check - it's hard to find real photo with cowl flaps totally closed

Thanks for the quick answer but just a quick question, is it the lever above the throttle that says air intake filter ?Andrey wrote:Keep cowl flaps open, do not use throttle on 100% for long time.

That's for the carburettor air intake, cowl flaps switch is at the bottom right of the centre console, behind all the engine levers. There are two switches there one is cowl flaps the other I can't recall, but they are labelled. It's a spring to centre three way switch push forward (i think) to close, rearward to open (or the other way round!) You will see the cowl flaps open in front of the windscreen, they are huge!

One is for the cowl flaps - self evident when they are opening as they're in the line of sight. The other is for the oil shutter - there's a gauge above the carb heat/fuel shutoff lever to tell you how open the flap is.
Obviously, use cowl flaps to keep cylinder head temps under control. Use oil shutter to keep oil temps to satisfactory levels.
Alex, does the oil shutter also speed oil warm-up after startup?

Good question Simon, let me answer for Alex ) Actually it should, we try to provide the influence of oil shutters position on oil temp, but is some doubts this working exactly same as in reality, probably this is thing need to be check one more time.snave wrote:

Re: AN-2 engine fire/overheat!
FSX has no oil shuter function. The cowling setting is not directly influencing it but if you manage the CHT the oil should be good too. In a possible next version we may include oil temperature control via the shutter.

I'm really glad you modeled engine failure due to cylinder overheat. I just cant seem to make it happen in flight. On ground I've managed to heat up until engine fire with cowls closed. Once I'm airborne, I can fly full throttle with cowls closed as much as I want and cylinders still dont overheat enough to fail.
Am I missing something? I want it to fail, it's much more rewarding if I have to constantly monitor my gauges.

Just wait until the new update will be available. We have further tweaked the temperature behavior. And I don't know when it will come out!
