New 21st RAC Repaint Available

Post by Roughrider » 12 Aug 2010, 21:03

Based upon a photo (circa 1969) provided by Blackace 16/Catkiller44, Jim Hodkinson has faithfully reproduced another outstanding Vietnam-era Army Bird Dog.

The subject aircraft (0-14950) belonged to the 21st Reconnassiance Airplane Company - a sister company to the 220th RAC. In 1969 a platoon of the 21st RAC "Black Aces" operated out of the the USMC Marble Mountain Air Faclity (Da Nang, RVN), flying Marine Corps air controllers on missions in support of the 1st Marine Division in the Da Nang Tactical Area of Responsiblity (TAOR). Later in 1969, Blackace 16 flew DMZ missions out of Dong Ha as Catkiller 44 with 1st Platoon, 220th RAC.

Microsoft sure didn't spend much time on creating a realistic Vietnam, did they! Da Nang is there, but flying west it's just like flying over Britain. Even the bush doesn't look like bush. What a let-down. :(

Got the whole thing, gentlemen! Many thanks! NOW we get rice paddies and endless bush.. I installed it last night and flew out of DaNang on about 280 in the general direction of An Khe, just sightseeing, but haven't downloaded any of the war maps yet, so didn't reach it. Will do that tonight, and get some more time in as the weekend draws near. Also have to read ChickenHawk again - pretty good read.

Isn't that about huey pilots? Read it twice, I'll have to read it again. Every so often in life something comes along that looks 'right' and the Bell HU-1 Huey was one of those things. Along, I might add, with the BirdDog, Spitfire, the Ferrari 250 GTO and..... :)
Computer: Black box with a bunch of electrical looking stuff inside. Lots of fans and blue lights and it sits there humming away gently and lets me play games on it.

Hi Ron; it's been a while... How're things in Chelmsford? Yes - the Ferrari 250 GTO.. I remember when the Pontiac GTO came out - "Motor" magazine (I think) ran a comparison between the two vehicles at Brands Hatch...

Yes - the Huey.. Nemeth Designs have one - been out for FSX for a year or so, with a second service pack coming out in a week or two - and thanks to Black Ace 16, Roughrider and Jim H. I now have a Huey as well as the BD, plus all the VN scenery. A small portion of my RAF service took place in Guyana - or British Guiana - as it was back in '65-6. HAR 10's in logistical support of the British Army. Lots of bush, bugs and heat, so these Bird Dog postings have opened up a whole new facet of FSX, not to mention the memories.

Yo PJ! I confess to not having been on this forum for yonks which is good because when you come back it looks quite a busy little burg. Lots of unread posts!
Incidently, I think it's against Italian law to mention Ferrari GTO in the same line of type as the 'other' GTO. Just thought you'd like to know.
Things in Chelmsford are good and the conversion to flight simming is now complete. Spending like a sailor on shore leave! Sheesh! Where will it end?
Doing a lot of flying with the Backcountry©PropClub guys. Mostly Americans but it can't be helped.
Sold that bike yet?

Naaah.. stuck with it 'till next year I suppose. Andrey & Co are getting fired up over the Pitts... surprising what a bit of competition will do? Spending? haha! You, too, eh! Pitts, Lancaster, Asia, FSUIPC, the Nemeth Huey, plus a couple of other niceties from FTX/OrbX. Now I'm in the middle of rebuilding my cockpit - pulled out the yoke and column and replaced it with a heli column and collective lever. Last night I knocked the soldering iron off it's little perch behind me (crouched down in middle of cockpit) (if you've ever tried to troubleshoot a radio problem in a Chipmunk you know what I mean) and it dropped across a lamp cable which melted and shorted and caused a whacking great blue flash which resulted in me grabbing the hot end with my left thumb and index finger and trying to rip it out of the wall (breath) and......it still hurts.. :x Duh! Stop laughing!

Ice is good,

Regards,
Paul J
